Frequently asked planner questions

Most Laurel Denise planners are made with 130 gsm interior paper, giving you a smooth, substantial writing surface for everyday planning. Our monthly tab pages are made with a thicker 290 gsm paper for extra durability as you flip through your planner throughout the year.

What about pens and highlighters?

Our paper works well with most pens and highlighters, but performance can vary depending on the ink, nib, and how heavily you write or highlight. If you’re unsure, we recommend testing your favorite pen in an inconspicuous spot first.

Start by visiting our Compare Our Planners page for an overview of our layouts and which planning styles work best with each one. That will help you understand what you're looking at.

Then, check out our Inspiration: Planners in Use page for inspiration on how to set up your planner. If you can "see yourself" in a planner, it helps make the hope of organization more tangible.

Laurel’s Quick Planning Tips

  1. Start with a Brain Drop
Write down every task, appointment, and idea floating around in your head. Get it all out onto paper or a digital note. (For extra fun, use one of our notepads designed just for this.)
  2. Input Deadlines
Transfer the deadlines and projects from your brain drop into your monthly and weekly planner views. You can set this up one month at a time or map out your entire year in advance. (Pro Tip: Consider planning just three months ahead. Use sticky notes as placeholders for appointments in later months—your planning style might evolve, and this approach keeps things flexible.
  3. Assign Tasks
Take the remaining tasks from your brain drop and assign them to a specific day, week, or month. Focus on imminent tasks first, and place long-term ideas in the corresponding month’s list to revisit later.
  4. Track Unassigned Items
Keep a small sticky note or one of our Pop-In-Panels handy with tasks that don’t have an immediate deadline. Address these as you find time and mental capacity or delegate them when possible.

Remember: Planning Is a Process

We revisit this process often, starting with a brain drop and working through the steps to organize our swirling thoughts into manageable actions. No matter where you are in your planning journey, be kind to yourself. There’s no such thing as perfect planning.

If you have any questions or need more guidance, we’re always here to help. Happy planning!

We share new content on our YouTube channel almost every week and post daily updates on Instagram, featuring creative planner spread ideas and lots of fun. For layout-specific inspiration, explore our Instagram highlights, neatly organized by layout type.

Don't miss our How to Use our Planners page that features images of some of our favorite filled in planner spreads.

Every Laurel Denise planner offers a unique blend of daily, weekly, and monthly views to help you stay organized. Some layouts focus on just monthly or weekly views, while others combine multiple views so you can see everything together.

Here’s a quick look at how they differ:

The Scout is spiral-bound, with short weekly and daily pages along the bottom. A favorite for many, it’s ideal if you want to see everything at once without overcomplicating your system.

The Nancy features short weekly pages in the center with horizontal rows. Best if you like to keep track of everything in one place and manage multiple responsibilities at once.

The Anne has short weekly pages in the center with vertical, lined columns. Best if you prefer to plan your day hour by hour or time block your schedule.

The Rose doesn’t include weekly or daily pages around the coil (though inserts can be added). It offers a monthly view on the left and open space on the right, which is perfect if you like to separate your planning into categories or lists.

The Carmen is our most traditional layout, featuring a large monthly planner. Best if you want a simple, high-level view of what’s coming up.

Think of your monthly and weekly views as two different levels of your plans.

Your monthly view helps you see the big picture. Use it for the dates, plans, deadlines, events, or reminders you want to keep in sight throughout the month.

Your weekly view gives you space for the details. Use it for appointments, tasks, time blocking, lists, or whatever you need to figure out what’s happening this week and what you’re actually going to do.

But there’s no perfect way to divide the two. You might keep your family schedule on the month and your own tasks on the week, use the month for deadlines and the week for the steps that get you there, or repeat important plans in both places so you don’t lose sight of them.

Start with big picture on the month and details on the week, then adjust as you learn what you actually need to see in each place.

Our planners come in a variety of sizes depending on the layout. Many of our most popular layouts are available in both Large and Small, while others are offered in one size based on how the layout is designed.

The Scout and The Luna are available in both Large and Small. The Nancy, The Anne, and The Rose also come in both Large and Small, with a wider landscape shape. Other planners, including Claire, Billie, Valerie, Jo, Kristy, Mae, and Carmen, have their own size and format options.

Because dimensions vary by layout, you can Compare Our Planners to see sizes side by side. You'll also find exact measurements in the product photos on each planner page.

Wondering how much writing space you'll actually have? Try our free Planner Size Printable. It includes true-to-size samples of some of the most-used areas of our planner layouts, so you can print them at home and get a better feel for the writing space before you choose.

The right planner size is the one that gives you enough room for the way you plan. Think about how much you like to write, what you’re keeping track of, where your planner usually lives, and whether you want to carry it with you.

A Small planner might be your fit if you love a more compact setup, tend to write smaller, have limited desk space, or want a planner that’s easier to take with you.

A Large planner might be your fit if you like having more room to spread out, write larger, keep lots of notes and lists, or use your planner to keep track of several parts of your life in one place.

And don’t worry about choosing a size based on how “serious” of a planner you are. Small doesn’t mean simple, and Large doesn’t mean you have to fill every inch of the page. There’s no perfect in planning. You’re looking for the amount of space that feels good to you.

If you’re having trouble picturing the difference, we have a couple of ways to help. Our planner product photos show real handwriting inside the layouts, so you can see how much writing space you’ll actually have.

You can also try our free Planner Size Printable. It includes true-to-size samples of some of the most-used parts of our planner layouts, so you can print them at home, grab your favorite pen, and actually try the writing spaces yourself. The printable isn’t a to-scale version of the entire planner; it’s designed to help you get a feel for the space you’ll use when you plan.

Because dimensions and available sizes vary by layout, you can Compare Our Planners to see the size options side by side. You’ll also find exact measurements in the product photos for each planner.

We do not offer our planner layouts as a printable file.

Laurel has created some printable layouts that are slightly different from the planners we offer and they can be found here.

The most popular app for digital planners, GoodNotes, only allows for a single planner screen to change at a time, making it impossible to format a Laurel Denise layout on this app (we need 4 screens at one time!). Until we decide to add "tech company" to our small business, we will continue manufacturing the high quality paper planners you've come to love.

We will absolutely continue to research if we can make our unique format into a digital layout and hope to be able to offer it in the future!!

Laurel Denise planners are available in several binding styles, depending on the planner and how you like to plan.

Our planner collection includes spiral, wire-o, bookbound, sewn, and discbound options. If you love the flexibility to add, remove, and rearrange pages, our Discbound Planning System lets you build your planner with your choice of cover, discs, and refillable planner inserts.

Binding options vary by planner layout, so if you have a particular style in mind, you can Compare Our Planners to see which bindings are available for each layout.

Unfortunately, coptic or flat-lay binding isn't suitable for our planners with short and long pages, as this type of binding requires pages to be uniform in size and width. The unique design of our planners makes this challenging, but we’re committed to exploring solutions to make this a possibility in the future!

What about Coptic or flat-lay binding?

Coptic and other flat-lay binding styles aren’t currently compatible with our signature short and long page design because those binding methods typically require pages to be uniform in size and width. We’re always exploring ways to make our planners even better, but preserving the layout that lets you see your plans together is our priority.
